BABY, IT’S COLD OUTSIDE: Choosing a Fall/Winter coat

Brrrr!

If you will recall (and maybe if you’re like me and were one of the ones with a shovel and you’d just prefer not to), last winter, most of the U.S. had to dig out of record snowfalls or other forms of winter weather. And considering the recent cold snap and frosty mornings, it's time to get prepared for another year of the same dropping mercury.

Choosing a fall and/or winter coat is serious business. It’s the first thing people see upon your entrance during this time of the year. It’s the last thing they see as you sashay out the door. Here are some trends for the Fall/Winter 2011/2012 season:

Fur (real/faux): Whether you choose real or faux, fur is hot, hot, hot. It is the absolute top trend this season. Makers of faux fur have perfected it to the point that it’s nearly indistinguishable from real. The also no longer become matted when worn more than a few times or become rained upon. Faux fur is also much more affordable than real fur. If you are daring, you can go for a full furry item. The current, and more manageable, trend is fur collars, hoods, and cuffs. Some coats go as far as offering detachable collars for additional mix-n-match options.

Capes: These made a brief appearance last year but this year, they are much improved. I recommend these for dinners out, date nights, holiday parties, etc. They are less likely to crush any elegant ensemble you are wearing. One note of warning, they are a bit difficult in which to drive but it’s doable. If you plan on wearing it often or driving comfortably, make sure you get one with arm slit extending from the hemline halfway up the front. The hand pocket slits don’t allow for as much arm extension.

Maxi coats: Maxi coats (floor-reaching hemlines) were on the runways but for practical purposes, it’s not the most practical and easy-wearing trend. Trying to get in and out of a vehicle seems challenging. Also, keeping the bottom from getting soggy in the rain would be difficult.

Old standbys: Trench and Pea coats - Most of us do not require a long coat for day-to-day wear. I’ve found that the best option for work is the traditional standby, the pea coat. Basic black is fine but this season is leaning toward bright colors: red, fuschia, green, blue. I adore an attractive, neutral Trench coat. Generally, Trench coats don’t offer warmth in howling weather however some of the better quality ones have detachable, heavy liners.

Residuals from last year: Military style jackets and Toggle coats. If you have them, keep wearing them.

During the long dreary months, color can be quite uplifting. Make sure it complements your skin tone and can be worn with a good portion of your closet without clashing. What’s the fun of a fuschia coat that you can only wear with black it? As an investment piece ($300-$1,000), a neutral color is your best bet. When you are trying on a coat, keep in mind that you will need room for layers (i.e. can you bend your arms while wearing that sweater and an oxford shirt?) Sometimes going up a size will save you some difficulty later.

Face the cold front in style. I’ll keep the fireplace on for you.

Autumn is here!

I love Autumn! Crisp air. Pumpkins (pie!). Colorful nature. Crunchy leaves under my feet. I'm going to have to pass on the raking though. But I digress.

Autumn also brings a wardrobe challege...dressing in layers... layers to do the job but also to look good as you shed them. But what about those fabulous summer items that you aren't ready to pack away just yet. Let's extend their functional life!

The maxi dress: I recommend a chunky pullover sweater or cardigan and belted with a skinny belt and booties. If your maxi dress is looser on the bottom, utilize a close fitting top. If the bottom is close fitting, use a looser top. It's all about proportion.

Whites: I know, I know. Southern gals don't wear white after Labor Day. What are we??? Our mothers? No. I prefer to limit that rule to no white shoes after Labor Day. Keep wearing those white jeans but take the summer out of them by using a darker palatte, i.e. dark plaid or flannel button down, fall's fur frenzy trend, with them.

Lace dresses: Tone the frill down with a military or safari inspired jacket. Finish it off with suede booties or chunky soled shoes.

That's just a start. With some ingenuity, you can extend most of your summer smashes into fall favorites. But I can't help you with the Havaianas. I have nothing nice to say about socks with flip-flops.

Hello all! I hope you had a blessed Christmas holiday! I also hope you are keeping snug in this crisp weather! Unfortunately, we were unable to open yesterday due to road conditions but we are back to normal hours. We have scarves galore along with some beautiful hand crochet toboggans. I highly recommend purchasing a toboggan while you can because they are unique items and the artist is no longer able to create them due to her health. They are beautiful pieces of work. We also have lots of coats and sweaters to keep you warm while playing in our winter wonderland!
